Injuries and Illnesses of Korean Athletes during 2002 Busan Asian Games

Abstract
2002 Busan Asian Games were held from September 26 to October 14 successfully. Korean athletes medical team was composed of 5 medical doctors, 7 physiotherapiests and 2 nurses. Mean age of male athletes who visited Medical Office was 29.96 years old and that of female athletes was 23.88. Male visitors was 59.7%. Major reason for visit was sports injury(82.7%), followed by medical illnesses(16.7%) and combined(0.6%). Injury rates, number of cases for sports injury per number of athletes, were higher in rugby, karatedo, gymnastics, badminton and basketball than other sports. Chronic overuse injuries(65.6%), non contact injuries(74.2%) were dominant and main injury site was lower extremities(52.8%). Most injuries occurred during main exercise session rather than warming up or cool down periods. Muscular and joint injuries were occurred frequently and mild. Major illnesses were upper respiratory tract infection, gastroenteritis(53.9%) but ophthalmologic, dermatologic, dental problems were often occurred. Most athletes did not take any medicine for previous one month(92.6%) and visited on early stage of illnesses(83.7%, within one week)
